This
home has a timber framed core and shed sections built using structural
insulated panels (SIPS). Loosely based on the design of our Timber Shop,
the building has an expansive first floor and a small loft/studio on the
second floor where the timber frame is two stories.
The frame itself was done in Southern Red Oak with several peeled Southern Yellow Pine logs acting as tie beams over the living areas. The peeled logs reflect the owners affinity for Japanese architecture. The wraparound porches provide added living space, a place for the family pets to hang out, and they shade the homes interior from the summer sun. A small greenhouse is also tucked under the porch roof.
The
homeowners worked very closely with us to develop this design, and they
acted as their own contractors and even did much of the work themselves.
Mike helped us with the raising and even came to the shop to cut some
of the joinery himself.
